Track 1: The Shoulder and Elbow Joints: Tendonitis vs Tendonosis Evaluation and Treatment/The OT Perspective and Lymphedema

After completion of this course, participants will be able to effectively determine the differences between tendonitis and tendonosis. Participants will be able to complete comprehensive evaluations of both the shoulder and elbow joints, in addition to determining the appropriate course of treatment for both diagnoses. Knowledge, assessment tools, and treatment techniques obtained throughout this course can be applied to multiple settings and to a variety of populations.

This portion of the course will provide a valuable, OT perspective of treatment techniques. The content will focus on physiology of the lymphatic system, manual lymphatic drainage, and systemic effects for orthopedic and neurological conditions.

Track 2: Occupational Therapists as Members of the Perinatal Care Team

This course will address maternal health as an emerging niche for occupational therapists in the United States.  We are currently experiencing a maternal health crisis in our country, and mothers are increasingly seeking to better educate themselves and understand their options and their bodies through the transitions of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.  This course will address the ways in which maternal health practice aligns with our practice framework, as well as practical ways in which occupational therapists can be valuable, contributing members of the maternal health team.

Joanna Lutman, LOTR, CEAS I received her Masters of Occupational Therapy from LSU’s Health Sciences Center, where her capstone project investigated the role of OT in supporting survivors of human trafficking.  Since she has begun practicing, Joanna has worked with adults in multiple settings, with a focus on upper extremity dysfunction, ergonomics, and trauma informed care.  After spending several years as the sole provider of OT services at the VA’s Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Slidell, Joanna’s professional life was turned on its head by the birth of her own baby.  As a clinical practitioner, Joanna was disappointed by the lack of education she received from the healthcare system about the transitions her body would make through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.  However, she also came to realize how perfectly positioned occupational therapy is as a profession to fill this current gap in maternal care.  Joanna is now venturing into this emerging niche with the establishment of Peace Tide Occupational Therapy for Maternal Health and Wellness, located in Slidell out of Life Care Family Wellness.

Additional speakers to present:

Kristin Smith, DC (chiropractor)

Grace Jackson, CPM (midwife)

Nicole Sonier, RN, CBS (lactation specialist)

Track 3: Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM): Impacts in Skilled Nursing Facilities

Effective October 1, 2019, new payment models are now the driving force of payment in skilled nursing facilities across the country, impacting nursing and therapy.
Therapy minutes no longer drive the reimbursement to calculate a RUG rate and now payments are driven by patient’s characteristics, co-morbidities and ICD 10 specific diagnosis codes. Occupational profiles, skilled documentation, standardized tests, proper discharge planning/instructions and collaboration with other disciplines will be essential to ensuring that patients receive the best treatment and length of stays. This course will address the challenges that we are facing as therapists and provide the necessary tools to succeed in this setting for our patients.

Chantella C. Sculthorp P.T.A.

I was first interested in therapy in high school and was a rehab technician in a small hospital, where we provided PT/OT/ST. I graduated from Delgado with an Associate of Science in 1993, the very first PTA class in New Orleans. I am also married to a PTA and moved to New Orleans to pursue a career in management in long term care in 1995 as a program manger and then as a regional manager of therapy departments. I have two children in college and am currently working as the lead therapist for Triton Healthcare, a contract  company providing therapy services to skilled nursing facilities.

Juleah Roberts, LOTR

I first found interest in Occupational Therapy in high school during allied health class. We would volunteer at a local SNF/residential nursing home, and I was drawn to all the fun activities OT’s did with their skilled patients in the gym. I went to Southeastern Louisiana University where I got my B.S. in Kinesiology.  After that, I got my Masters degree in OT at LSU New Orleans. I originally thought I would find an OT career in pediatrics, as I worked as an ABA therapist prior/during OT school, but I fell in love with the acute setting during my last level II fieldwork. I landed a job at that very hospital, St. Tammany Parish Hospital, shortly after graduating in May 2019.
